What is Neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery includes surgical procedures specific to the spine, spinal cord and nerve roots. The spine consists of 24 vertebrae, sacrum, inter vertebral discs, coccyx and spinal discs. The spine encompasses and protects the spinal cord and spinal canal. Surgery is usually indicated to stabilize the spine or eliminate arm or sciatica (leg) pain.

What procedures are performed?

Common procedures performed include: microdiscectomy, microlaminotomy, microlaminectomy, lumbar fusions, anterior cervical disectomy and fusion (ACDF), kyphoplasty and anterior lumbar innerbody fusion (ALIF). Dr. Hsu also manages and treats Hydrocephalus, performs shunt placement and Crainiotomy for brain tumors.

What is a Microsurgery?

Microsurgery is a type of operation technique that uses a surgical microscope and microscopic technique. Microscopic techniques include small surgical incisions of 1-1.5 inches or less. The benefits of a microsurgery include shorter hospital stays, faster recovery time and immediate results.

What is a Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that repairs spinal fractures with bone cement. The benefi ts of kyphoplasty includes minimal recovery time and improvement in mobility. The procedure can be done on an outpatient basis meaning you may go home that evening.

Pain Management

If you are not a surgical candidate you maybe referred to a pain specialist such as Dr Abudu for epidural steroid injections. Other nonsurgical options maybe recommend depending on your specific needs such as Physical Therapy, rest, over the counter pain relievers, application of heat or ice.
